UnitedHealthcare has increased its partnership with the workout platform Peloton in an effort to position itself as a hub for all things health-related as customers increasingly combine in-person and online channels to access medical and wellness offerings.
Up to 10 million commercial clients of the biggest health insurer in the nation would be eligible for a free year-long subscription to the Peloton App or a three-month waiver toward an All-Access Membership under the updated and extended arrangement.
Most qualifying members will also receive discounted rates on select Peloton-related workout tools, including the Peloton Bike, Bike+, and Tread.
“Our initial offer with Peloton is proving useful in helping encourage many of our members to start or stay active, with the goal of supporting their mental, physical, and emotional health,” says Dr. Rhonda Randall, chief medical officer for UnitedHealthcare’s commercial business. More people will be able to reach their fitness goals by maximizing the value of their health benefits.
The announcement comes after news that a federal judge had authorized UnitedHealth Group’s $13 billion purchase of Change Healthcare.
Change Healthcare utilizes analytics and data to improve how healthcare is provided and how payments are made generally. These analytics may, among other things, “automate provider contracts to aid minimize expenditures and boost efficiency,” according to the company’s website.
The acquisition of Change Healthcare and the contract with Peloton are two instances of a trend that is rapidly emerging in the connected economy. About half of the clients surveyed used a variety of channels to get the treatment they needed, according to the research “Omnichannel Healthcare Takes Center Stage.”
