Humana may be considering purchasing Cano Health, according to a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report citing anonymous sources.
This is part of a wider trend of healthcare companies acquiring primary-care practitioners.
The conversations appear to be “serious,” and a final decision might be made in the coming weeks if the talks do not collapse. CVS and other unidentified firms were rumored to be interested in the deal.
Cano, on the other hand, may go all-in with Humana since the insurer has first dibs on any sale as part of a 2019 agreement.
Humana did this by acquiring Kindred at Home, the nation’s biggest home health and hospice provider, in August 2021. It expanded its at-home services when it formed the CenterWell Home Health firm.
“CenterWell strives to seamlessly merge patient data, coordinate treatment and handoffs, and connect directly with patients as well as their physicians, so living environments and social support networks are taken into account,” Humana noted in a news release. “Because CenterWell is payer-agnostic, it welcomes members and patients from all Medicare Advantage, traditional Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial plans, not only Humana programs.”
